Hemodialysis Technician

CHT I

Applicant must meet the prerequisites.

  1. High school graduate or successful completion of general education development (GED) course.
    1. Community college or university transcript is also acceptable.
    2. If applicant possesses an international diploma, an equivalency evaluation must be submitted.
  2. Successful completion of an approved Certified Hemodialysis Technician (CHT) training program.
  3. Attach letter of verification from the Certified Hemodialysis Technician (CHT) training program indicating successful completion of board approved program.
  4. Complete the required application by the deadline and remit the required fee.
  5. Results of the examination shall be reported by mail or can be verified on the board website bon.nm.gov no later than four (4) weeks following the examination date. Applicants who successfully complete the examination shall be issued a certificate.

CHT II

Applicant must meet the prerequisites.

  1. High school graduate or successful completion of general education development (GED) course.

    1. Letter must be on agency letterhead, signed by the nurse educator (NE), and submitted directly to BON by the Nurse Educator. The Nurse Educator attests that the applicant has met requirements for testing according to the Rules. In addition, the following attestations of the Nurse Educator must be verified.
    2. Verify that the nurse educator is board approved. The Nurse Educator on the application should be the Nurse Educator where the applicant is employed, not the Nurse Educator who provided classroom instruction, as these are not always the same person.
    3. Verify that the program(s) where the applicant received classroom and clinical training is board-approved and contact the Education Division if there are any discrepancies. o
    4. Verify that the number of classroom and clinical hours the applicant received meet the minimum requirement.
  4. Attach a copy of a current CPR card.
  5. Complete the CERTIFIED MEDICATION AIDE OR CERTIFIED HEMODIALYSIS TECHNICIAN EXAMINATION / RE-EXAMINATION APPLICATION by the deadline and remit the required fee.
  6. Results of the examination shall be reported by mail or can be verified on the board website bon.nm.gov no later than four (4) weeks following the examination date. Applicants who successfully complete the examination shall be issued a certificate.
  7. Applicants who fail the examination may not function as a Certified Hemodialysis Technician.
  8. Applicants must remain under the direct supervision of a board approved clinical preceptor until such time as the applicant successfully passes the Certified Hemodialysis Technician examination.
  9. Unsuccessful candidates may not repeat the examination for two (2) months. The examination may be taken a maximum of three (3) times. After the third failure, the applicant must provide verification of repeating and completing the training portion of a board-approved medication aide program to be eligible to sit for the exam.
